For the 1885-1922 constituency, see North Tipperary (UK Parliament constituency).

Template:Dáil Éireann constituency infobox Tipperary North is a parliamentary constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas. It was created for the 1948 general election when the old Tipperary constituency divided into North and South.

Details

The Tipperary North constituency has an electorate of 59,427 and at present is served by 3 Teachtaí Dála (TDs). The method of election is the Single Transferable Vote.

The constituency encompasses the whole area of Tipperary North County Council and a small part of South Tipperary County Council, taking in Thurles, Templemore, Nenagh and Roscrea. One of the most high profile TDs in the constituency is Michael Lowry, a former Fine Gael TD who was expelled from the party. Until the 2007 general election, Tipperary North was a rare example of a bellwether constituency in Ireland; since 1982, it returned two Fianna Fáil deputies out of three when that party achieved government and returned only one when the party failed to do so.
